Catching the Faith

The most effective way to pass the faith on to the next generation is for the faith to be an integral part of the home.  Sermons pass into the fog of the past as do catechetical lessons, but the relationship with a faithful person lives on forever.  Most people name a father, mother, or grandparent when asked who was integral to their faith formation as a child.  Faith-filled relationships are essential for a child to “catch” the faith.  Therefore, the most effective place to catch the faith is at home.

Parents may not be used to the idea of sharing their faith openly in the home with their children.  They may be fearful of doing or saying something wrong.  But young children don’t know the difference, so parents are able to share what they know, trusting that the Holy Spirit will guide them appropriately.

This page is intended to help families as they look for ways to allow the Lord intimately into their home.

Prayer Suggestion:

It is good for young children to pray for the people, animals, and

things that they care about.  Sometimes, as parents, it is hard

knowing what those things are.  Have them draw the people,

animals, and things that they want to pray for and then pray together for what they have drawn.  This is a good way for children to catch the idea of intercessory prayer.

Help Children Remember Jesus:

Remembering that Jesus loves us daily is as simple as washing our hands.  Teach your children correct hand washing technique by teaching them to sing “Jesus Loves Me” while washing their hands.  When they are done with their song, they have washed their hands for the appropriate amount of time.

Not a Parent?

Faith is not only caught from family.  Most spiritually healthy people had at least one other faithful person, besides family, who would have died for them.

Choose one child, other than family, and treat them as your own.

"Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me” – Mark 9:37
